Law in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

The legal system in Saudi Arabia is based on Islamic law, which is derived from the Holy Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet. The sources of legislation also include "consensus", which emerged due to the new issues that arose after the death of the Prophet. Its interpretation is influenced by the texts of the Hanbali school of Islamic jurisprudence. Saudi Arabia is the only one that relies on Sharia without codification. Therefore, the government announced its intention to codify the rules of Islamic law in 2010, and significant progress was made in publishing a reference book of legal principles and precedents on January 3, 2018.
